Best Locations for Your Yosemite Elopement

Choosing the perfect spot to say your vows in Yosemite is one of the most exciting parts of planning your elopement. Whether you're dreaming of an epic mountain top moment or a peaceful ceremony by a river, Yosemite has something for everyone. Here are some of my top recommendations:

Wedding in Yosemite Valley
  • Glacier Point – Imagine standing on the edge of the world with Half Dome in the distance—this is one of the most breathtaking places to elope, especially at sunrise or sunset.

  • Yosemite Valley – One of the most iconic and picturesque locations in the park, Yosemite Valley offers a variety of scenic spots surrounded by towering cliffs, waterfalls, and meadows. It’s a great choice for couples who want breathtaking landscapes with easy accessibility.

  • Yosemite Chapel – If you're looking for a traditional yet intimate setting, Yosemite Chapel is a charming, historic location nestled in the heart of Yosemite Valley. This option allows you to have a beautiful indoor ceremony while still being surrounded by the park’s stunning views.

  • Taft Point – If you’re an adventurous couple looking for a dramatic and jaw-dropping backdrop, Taft Point is perfect for those once-in-a-lifetime views.

  • Cathedral Beach – A peaceful, intimate spot along the Merced River, with towering views of El Capitan—perfect for couples who love a quiet and romantic setting.

  • Tunnel View – This iconic Yosemite viewpoint gives you everything—El Capitan, Bridalveil Fall, and Half Dome all in one frame!

  • Mariposa Grove – If you're enchanted by ancient trees and the serenity of a giant sequoia forest, this location provides a magical and earthy setting for your vows.

How to Get Your Yosemite Elopement Permit

Yes, you do need a permit to elope in Yosemite, but don’t worry—it’s an easy process! You can apply for a special-use permit through the National Park Service website. The application fee is $150, and I recommend applying at least 3 months in advance to secure your date and location.

Still feel overwhelmed when it comes to getting permits? Part of my elopement package actually includes me handling all the permits for you to take that off your plate and let you get back to the fun parts of planning your big day!

Rules, Guest Limits, and Ceremony Locations in Yosemite

While eloping in Yosemite is a dream, there are some important rules and restrictions to keep in mind when planning your ceremony. Yosemite National Park has designated areas where wedding ceremonies are allowed, and they must follow park guidelines to preserve the park’s beauty.

How Many Guests Can Attend?

Yosemite allows small wedding ceremonies, but guest limits vary by location:

  • Glacier Point – Up to 50 guests

  • Taft Point – Up to 11 guests (strictly enforced due to safety concerns)

  • Cathedral Beach – Up to 50 guests

  • Sentinel Beach – Up to 100 guests

  • Swinging Bridge Picnic Area – Up to 20 guests

  • Tuolumne Meadows Lodge Area – Up to 25 guests

Rules for Getting Married in Yosemite

To ensure your elopement goes smoothly, here are some key rules:

  • No arches, chairs, or amplified sound – Yosemite requires ceremonies to remain minimalistic to protect the natural environment.

  • No blocking trails or viewpoints – Weddings must not interfere with regular park visitors.

  • No confetti, rice, or flower petals – Anything that leaves behind debris is strictly prohibited. Remember to always Leave No Trace

  • Drones are not allowed – Drone photography and videography are banned within Yosemite National Park.

For the most up-to-date rules and to apply for your wedding permit, visit the National Park Service wedding permit page.

Choosing the Best Date and Time for Your Yosemite Ceremony

Two Brides on their Wedding in Yosemite

Yosemite is one of the most visited national parks, which means it can get quite busy—especially during peak seasons. If you want to have a more intimate and peaceful experience, selecting the right date and time for your elopement is crucial. Here are some tips for avoiding the biggest crowds and ensuring your ceremony feels special and private:

  • Avoid Peak Seasons: Yosemite sees the most visitors from May through September. If you want a quieter experience, consider eloping in early spring or late fall when the park is still stunning but far less crowded.

  • Weekdays are Best: Saturdays and Sundays bring the heaviest crowds. If possible, plan your ceremony for a weekday (Monday through Thursday) to enjoy a more secluded experience.

  • Early Mornings or Late Evenings: Sunrise ceremonies offer the most peaceful atmosphere, with fewer visitors and soft, dreamy light. Sunset can also be a great time, but be aware that popular viewpoints may still have tourists.

  • Consider Lesser-Known Locations: While spots like Glacier Point and Taft Point are breathtaking, they also attract lots of visitors. Opting for a quieter location like Tuolumne Meadows or Sentinel Beach can provide a more private setting.

Where to Stay Near Yosemite

Your elopement is more than just the ceremony—it’s an adventure! Finding the perfect place to stay will set the tone for your entire experience. Whether you’re dreaming of a cozy cabin in the woods, a luxurious lodge with breathtaking views, or a unique glamping spot, there are plenty of options to make your stay unforgettable. Think about what kind of atmosphere you want—peaceful and secluded, rustic and adventurous, or elegant and indulgent. Here are some of my favorite spots:

  • The Ahwahnee Hotel – For couples who want a mix of luxury and nature, this historic lodge is perfect.

  • Tenaya Lodge – A cozy, upscale resort just outside the park with plenty of amenities.

  • Autocamp Yosemite – If you’re looking for a stylish, glamping experience with Airstream trailers and luxury tents, this is it!

  • Yosemite Valley Lodge – A convenient option close to many Yosemite highlights.

  • Airbnbs & Cabins – For a more private and intimate experience, check out rentals in Oakhurst, Mariposa, or Groveland.

Activities to Include on Your Elopement Day

Your elopement day is more than just saying your vows—it’s about creating a once-in-a-lifetime adventure that reflects your love story! One of the best parts of eloping in Yosemite is the endless opportunities to explore, connect, and make unforgettable memories. Whether you’re a couple who loves hiking, chasing waterfalls, or simply enjoying a peaceful moment under the stars, there are so many ways to make your day special. Here are some fun ideas:

Bride and Groom by Yosemite Falls
  • Hike to Taft Point or Glacier Point for a sunrise moment together

  • Have a romantic picnic by the Merced River

  • Explore waterfalls like Bridalveil Fall or Yosemite Falls

  • Watch the stars in Yosemite Valley for a breathtaking end to your day

  • Enjoy a campfire celebration at your Airbnb or lodge

  • Hire a private chef to come back to cook dinner for you and your guests (if you bring any!)

Best Seasons to Elope in Yosemite

Choosing the perfect spot to say your vows in Yosemite is one of the most exciting parts of planning your elopement. Whether you're dreaming of an epic mountaintop moment or a peaceful ceremony by a river, Yosemite has something for everyone. However, it's important to keep in mind that certain locations may be inaccessible at different times of the year due to snow, road closures, or park regulations. High-elevation areas, such as Glacier Point and Tioga Pass, typically close from late fall to early spring due to snowfall. Always check current road conditions on the National Park Service website before making final plans. Here are some of my top recommendations:

  • Spring (April-June) – Waterfalls are at their peak, and the meadows are lush and green.

  • Summer (July-September) – Great for high-elevation locations, but expect warmer temperatures and more visitors.

  • Fall (October-November) – Stunning golden hues and fewer crowds make this a perfect time for elopements.

  • Winter (December-March) – A snowy wonderland, perfect for cozy and adventurous couples.
